He remembers the sights, the sounds and the smells.“I have warm feelings about my experiences in baseball in Central Park,” Wright said.

The park field is actually a busy place, Murray said.“We have 186 games scheduled each year,” he said. “It’s pretty special, really, and shows how much it means to him.

We think it’s great and we’ll be there to help any way we can.”Gary Wright graduated from Ashland High School in 1960 and Centre College in 1964. Wright still owns a home on Cincinnati’s West Side — the same part of town where Reds great Pete Rose grew up.“We come up a couple of months during hurricane season,” Wright said.

During that same era, Don Gullett pitched several games in the park — both in Babe Ruth leagues and during his high school days at Mc Kell — before going on to stardom in the major leagues with the Cincinnati Reds and New York Yankees.

Veteran major league umpire Charlie Reliford cut his teeth as an official in Central Park, calling many games at Chattin Field.

Carter, who has produced a documentary for PBS stations called “Mickey, White and Me,” based on a fantasy baseball camp, is exploring the possibility of a documentary on Ashland’s rich baseball heritage tentatively titled “Ashland’s Field of Dreams.” He is looking for pictures, video clips or other memorabilia to help with that project.“There’s still a lot of work to do,” Gary Wright said.

“Once the word’s out, we hope more and more from the community will want to be involved.”After all, Central Park’s main diamond has been a field of dreams for many Ashland residents.

Wright worked closely with some of Ashland’s greatest youth leaders, men like Ernie Chattin, Bo Mc Millen and Rex Miller. Sean Murray, the Parks and Recreation director for the city, has already set a timetable for the project. Construction would be completed by March 1, 2008, in time for games to be played on April 1.

He hopes to have drawings and bids for the renovations by Oct. The main diamond in Central Park once was the home of three high school teams — Ashland, Fairview and Holy Family.

Wright is donating 5,000 to upgrade Chattin Field, from new dugouts to a brick press box that will bear his father’s name — the T. The park was where Arizona Diamondback star Brandon Webb, the 2006 National League Cy Young Award winner, pitched for the Tomcats, Mickey Mantle and Connie Mack teams during the 1990s.
